Glad you asked. The answer is “it depends”. If you are in serious trouble with the IRS, ie, maybe you owe $25,000 or more in back taxes, you need to give serious thought as to whom you want to solve this problem.
Number 1. If your tax preparer is not a CPA, an Enrolled Agent, or an attorney, they are not allowed by law to represent you in front of the IRS. This wipes out a tremendous amount of tax preparers right off the bat.
Number 2. Your tax preparer may know taxes and may know them very well. The thing is this. They may have been doing taxes for 30 years, but doing tax resolution is a very narrow niche that requires specialized, advanced training. Most tax preparers do not want to take this on. CPAs and Enrolled Agents who do not specialize in this niche send their clients to us.
Number 3. Let’s say you’re having serious chest pains, like an elephant is sitting on your chest. You immediately contact your general practitioner who tells you to get to the ER ASAP and a cardiologist should be hooking you up with bells and whistles within 10 minutes to save your life. Your general practitioner is not trained to save your life if you are having a heart attack. The comparison may be a bit dramatic, but if you owe the IRS $25,000, $50,000, $100,000, $500,000, or more, you are having the tax equivalent of a life threatening heart attack. Seeing a Certified Tax Resolution Specialist is the equivalent of seeing a cardiologist.
At the Connecticut Tax Resolution Service you will deal not only with a CPA and Enrolled Agent, but a Certified Tax Resolution Specialist and member of the American Society of Tax Problem Solvers. We will analyze your financial situation and come up with a solution that your tax preparer may or may not be aware of.
