If you were having a heart attack, would you see your primary care physician or cardiologist? If you enjoy breathing, a cardiologist is the wiser answer. So it is with tax resolution and IRS representation because these problems are the tax equivalents of a ticker about to kick.
This is a true story told to me by a tax resolution colleague. My colleague had a client that hadn’t filed his taxes in 10 years. The client knew he owed in the tens of thousands in back taxes. Not realizing he needed a certified tax resolution specialist, the client hired a local CPA to help him get straight with the IRS. The local CPA told the client that he could prepare and file the back tax returns for him, but he recommended a certified tax resolution specialist to handle the IRS representation portion of the case (my colleague). The CPA filed 10 years of back taxes, and as expected, the client owed a large sum of money for all 10 years. The client then went to my colleague, the certified tax resolution specialist, to see if a payment plan could be worked out with the IRS to pay off the 10 years’ worth of back taxes. So far so good.
Not quite. My colleague listened to the client tell him the story of not filing tax returns for 10 years. Since he wanted to get straight with the IRS, he went to a local CPA to file the 10 years of tax returns. My colleague then had to break the news to the client that except in the rarest of circumstances, the IRS only requires SIX years of back taxes to be filed to be in compliance, not every year of tax returns not filed. My colleague now had to work out a payment plan for this client for four additional years of taxes that he should not have had to pay, but now, since the four additional years were filed, is now responsible for it.
